I was in the process of wiping a few old drives to prevent the data from falling into the wrong hands. A fairly typical process that’s also rather dull. Every now and then, though, I get to enjoy the last gasp of a dying drive.

This is definitely not the kind of thing you want to hear from a hard drive if it’s still in use. For some reason I hardly ever see this kind of problem because my drives typically go from functional to no platter movement at all. If this were work-related I might be tempted to purchase a copy of SpinRite just to see if it really is as good as they say.
